Why You Should Visit Japan in February

One of our favorite months to visit Japan? Hint: it’s not March or April...

Japan in February, Arbiter Travel Co.

While Japan has become one of the most sought-after destinations in recent years, visiting in February might just be the ultimate best-kept secret. (Though not-so-secret to Arbiter Travel Co. clients — we have 6 trips #bookedbyarbiter next month!)

Most first-time visitors assume cherry blossom season is a must — and while it’s undeniably beautiful, the crowds can feel overwhelming.

Winter in Japan, on the other hand, is every bit as stunning as spring or autumn, but far quieter, making sightseeing and securing coveted dining reservations far less stressful. (Plus, it’s peak strawberry season, which our founder Lauren Tulp Cichocki insists is reason enough to book flights immediately.)

Cities like Tokyo and Kyoto enjoy relatively mild winters with little snow (though when it does, it’s pure magic), and winter actually sees less rain compared to the summer months. For those seeking snow, you can head north to Hokkaido for epic powder skiing, or explore enchanting traditional villages and serene lake regions just a few hours from Tokyo by train or car.

And honestly, name a better way to warm up during February (arguably the bleakest month everywhere else in the world) than with a bowl of ramen, a Japanese whisky cocktail, or a soak in an onsen… We’ll wait.

Keep in mind, for Japan — even during shoulder season — we recommend starting to plan trips at least 6 months in advance (though closer to 12 months is ideal) to secure the best options.

Reach out to start planning for next fall or winter — we’d love for you to experience this beauty for yourself.
