Arbiter Approved: Estelle Manor

Estelle Manor, our favorite English countryside hotel.

Estelle Manor, one of our favorite English countryside hotels, is where heritage meets modern refinement.

Set on a sprawling Oxfordshire estate just outside the Cotswolds, Estelle Manor is a design-forward country house retreat that blends historic grandeur with a distinctly contemporary spirit. A thoughtfully restored Edwardian estate with the ease and energy of a private members’ club (which it also functions as), it’s the kind of place that feels equally suited to long weekends, celebratory stays, or a proper countryside reset.

The Hotel

Estelle Manor strikes a rare balance: grand without feeling formal, social without feeling overwhelming. Historic architecture and landscaped gardens set the scene, while the interiors skew eclectic and layered — antique furnishings, bold art, rich textures, and spaces designed to invite lingering. There’s a sense of playfulness throughout, always grounded in good taste. The overall mood is polished but unpretentious, making it as appealing for relaxed weekends as it is for special occasions.

The hotel has 108 keys, with rooms and suites spread across the Manor House, Stables, and Walled Gardens, along with private cottages and houses scattered throughout the surrounding woodland. Each category has its own personality — some classic and refined, others more relaxed and rustic — but all prioritize comfort and atmosphere. The Manor House is adults-only, while the Gardens and Stables welcome children. For families or groups, the private houses and woodland cabins offer additional space and privacy while remaining connected to the rhythm of the estate.

Getting There

Estelle Manor is approximately 90 minutes from London by car, making it an ideal weekend retreat from the city. Oxford station also offers direct train service from London Paddington and Marylebone, followed by a short drive to the estate.

When to Go

Spring through early autumn is ideal for making the most of the gardens, outdoor dining, and countryside walks. Summer brings a particularly social energy to the estate — especially around the beautifully designed outdoor pool — while autumn offers a quieter, cozier feel with fires lit and a slower pace. The estate is especially magical during the Festive season, and winter stays are best suited for spa-focused escapes and long, indulgent meals.

"The private club element gives it such an edge. You'll find that the guests are just as chic as the interiors."

Eat & Drink

Dining is central to life at Estelle Manor, with a collection of venues that encourage variety and an easy, come-and-go rhythm. Much of the produce is sourced directly from the estate’s gardens, and the cocktail program is notably creative. The overall approach is unfussy but elevated — more about atmosphere and ease than formality.

  • The Brasserie: The manor’s signature restaurant, serving seasonal British cooking in a richly decorated setting. Ideal for relaxed yet refined dinners.
  • The Billiards Room: A bold, intimate space offering elevated Chinese cuisine, perfect for evening dining with a sense of occasion.
  • The Armoury: A destination for Japanese-inspired dishes, blending precision and creativity in a striking setting.
  • The Glasshouse: A light-filled, all-day dining space with a Mediterranean-leaning menu, popular for breakfast, long lunches, and casual dinners.
  • The Orangery & Terrace: Ideal for daytime bites, aperitifs, and garden views in warmer months.
  • The Living Room Bar: A convivial gathering space for cocktails, pre-dinner drinks, and late-night lingering.
  • The Potting Shed Café: A relaxed stop for coffee, pastries, and casual fare throughout the day.

To Do

Days at Estelle Manor can be as active or unstructured as you like. Guests can explore walking trails across the estate, play padel or tennis, take fitness classes, or arrange countryside pursuits such as archery or falconry. The outdoor pool becomes a social hub in warmer months, while nearby Cotswolds villages and Oxford make for easy half-day excursions — though many guests find little reason to leave the grounds.

Families are well considered here, with child-friendly accommodations, outdoor space to roam, and activities that appeal to multiple generations, making it a strong option for relaxed family countryside stays.

Wellness

Wellness at Estelle Manor centers around the expansive Eynsham Baths, a Roman-inspired bathing complex designed for slow, restorative rituals. Thermal pools, steam rooms, cold plunges, and quiet tea rooms create a deeply calming flow. Treatments focus on relaxation and restoration rather than high-tech intervention.

The experience is complemented by The Clubhouse Gym and Fitness Centre, offering state-of-the-art equipment, group fitness classes, and personal training, alongside outdoor movement and wellness programming across the estate.
