Cozy Winter Escapes

Getaway Guide

December 2, 2020

‘Tis the season to be cozy! As we head into another winter (wasn’t it just March yesterday??), we have scenes of snowy wonderlands, crackling fires, and hot toddies in our heads.

We’ve rounded up 11 of our favorite winter escapes in the USA, all of which would be perfect for a long weekend getaway (skiing optional!). Pick your favorite and send us a note if you’re interested in booking anything! As noted below, when #bookedbyarbiter, our clients get amazing perks (and usually upgrades), and we often have access to exclusive incentives. Then all that’s left for you to do is bundle up and channel your inner Ralph Lauren ad…

AMANGANI
Jackson Hole, WY

image via Amangani

Jackson Hole is one of the best winter (and summer, IMO) destinations in the country. Hit the slopes in Teton Village, or if you prefer to stay on horizontal ground, dog-sledding among the elk in Grand Teton National Park is not to be missed. Or just soak up Amangani‘s iconic infinity pool and take in the winter wonderland… And of course don’t miss a (masked) night at Million Dollar Cowboy Bar.

Getting There: A 30 minute drive from Jackson Hole Airport (JAC), which has seasonal nonstop flights from 15 major US cities, including LAX, SFO, DFW, EWR & LGA.

Arbiter Amenities:

  • Priority status for room upgrade
  • Daily breakfast for two guests per room
  • $100 food & beverage credit
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability

THE RESORT AT PAWS UP
Greenough, MT

Winter at The Resort at Paws Up is nothing short of magic. From horse-drawn carriages to snowmobiles to ice fishing and everything in between, there is truly something for everyone. Plus, meals and drinks are included in the rates, so definitely save some time to eat drink and be merry.

Getting There: A 30 minute drive from Missoula Airport (MSO) which has seasonal nonstop flights from most major US cities. Round-trip airport transfers are included in your stay.

Arbiter Amenities:

  • Priority status for room upgrade
  • Complimentary round-trip airport transfers

EDGEWOOD TAHOE
Stateline, NV

Tahoe is one of the easiest ski resorts to get to for us Californians, and the relatively new Edgewood Tahoe has been a total game-changer in the luxury hotel market. Shuttle service is provided for the 2-mile drive to the base of Heavenly Mountain, and there is a winter activities park in town for the little ones. Or you can just post up and stare out at the beautiful blue lake in front of you, spiked cocoa in hand.

Getting There: A 4-hour drive from San Francisco, or 1 hour drive from Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO).

Arbiter Amenities:

  • Priority status for room upgrade
  • Daily breakfast credit
  • $100 resort credit
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability

MONTAGE DEER VALLEY
Park City, UT

image via Montage Magazine

Deer Valley/Park City has been one of my favorite winter destinations since I was a little kid. The magical chalet that is Montage Deer Valley has one of the best ski-in/ski-out locations, the most phenomenal spa and indoor pool, and lots of amazing food & beverage options (including their v Instagrammable Après Lounge aka Veuve Clicquot yurt where you can channel your inner RHOSLC).

Getting There: A 45-minute drive from Salt Lake City Airport (SLC), which offers multiple daily nonstop flights from all major airports.

Arbiter Amenities:

  • Guaranteed upgrade at time of booking
  • Daily breakfast credit
  • $100 resort credit
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability

DUNTON HOT SPRINGS
Dunton, CO

image via Dunton Destinations

It’s hard to pick the coziest on this list, but Dunton Hot Springs (sister property to Amangiri) just might take the cake. Though there are plenty of winter activities (snowshoeing & cross-country skiing, ice-skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowmobiling) to keep everyone busy, you might find yourself wanting to simply stay warm in your cabin or in one of the eponymous hot springs that the camp is built around. The location is a bit remote, but food & beverages (it’s Relais & Chateaux, so you know it’ll be good) and many activities are included in the rates, so you really won’t need to leave.

Getting There: A 1-hour drive from Cortez Airport (CEZ), which offers nonstop flights from Denver & Phoenix; a 1.5-hour drive from Telluride Regional Airport (TEX), which offers nonstop flights from Denver; a 2-hour drive from Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO), which offers seasonal nonstop flights from many major airports; or a 3-hour drive from Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), which offers seasonal nonstop flights

Arbiter Amenities:

  • Priority status for room upgrade
  • All meals are included in rates
  • $100 resort credit
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability

THE LITTLE NELL
Aspen, CO

image via The Little Nell

Whether you ski or not, Aspen is one of the original chic winter getaways that we have here in the States. If you do ski, you’ll love The Little Nell‘s legendary Ski Concierge, complete with boot warming service. If you don’t, you’ll love their rooftop pool and reimagined-for-2020/2021 wine bar (formerly apres-ski bar, Chair 9). You can also spend the weekend shopping or hopping from one dining hotspot to the next.

Getting There: A 10-minute drive from Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE), which offers seasonal nonstop flights from many major airports. A 90-minute drive from Vail/Eagle (ESE) or 4-hour drive from Denver International Airport (DEN).

Arbiter Amenities:

  • Priority status for room upgrade
  • Daily full breakfast for two per room
  • $100 food & beverage credit
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability

BLACKBERRY MOUNTAIN
Walland, TN

image via Blackberry Mountain

Another Relais & Chateaux property that gives a whole new meaning to the term “all-inclusive,” Blackberry Mountain (sister/neighbor to the more well-known Blackberry Farm, which is equally as cozy, and at which we also get 15% off rates), is less popular during the winter, but no less amazing. The dining is second-to-none, as are the views and the spa. This 4200-acre retreat in the Great Smoky Mountain retreat is the perfect winter getaway.

Getting There: A 25-minute drive from Knoxville/McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS), or a 3-hour drive from Nashville International Airport (BNA)

Arbiter Amenities:

  • 15% off published rates
  • Priority status for room upgrade
  • All meals are included in rates
  • $100 resort credit
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability

THE POINT
Saranac Lake, NY

image via The Point

If it’s good enough for Gwyneth and the Rockefellers, it’s good enough for me. The Point was one of the original Great Camps of the Gilded Age in the Adirondacks, but is arguably more magical in the winter than it is in the summer months that it was intended for. Another Relais & Chateaux all-inclusive option means that you won’t need to go far once you arrive to enjoy yourself. Winter activities include ice-skating & fishing and snowshoeing, and indoors you can enjoy classic movies, mulled or red wines, darts, cards, or pool by the fire. Although temporarily paused due to COVID, the black-tie communal dinners are a highlight of guests’ stays. Regardless, you will leave feeling like you stayed at a (very wealthy) family member’s home, and wanting to book your next visit.

Getting There: A 15 minute drive from Adirondack Regional Airport (SLK), which operates daily flights from BOS; a 2.5 – 3 hour drive from Burlington International Airport (BTV) or Albany International Airport (ALB); or a 5.5 hour drive from Boston or NYC

Arbiter Amenities:

  • Priority status for room upgrade
  • All meals are included in rates
  • Welcome amenity
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability

LAKE PLACID LODGE
Lake Placid, NY

image via Lake Placid Lodge

This luxury lodge in the Adirondacks features 17 private cabins and 13 suites, making it ideal for social distancing. Lake Placid Lodge is alpine-rustic-chic at its finest. Another historic Great Camp estate, it’s pure Americana and true luxury. Once you’ve had your share of ice-skating and snowshoeing, relax at the spa, and then cozy up by one of the 50 stone fireplaces on property. Then eat your heart out (it’s Relais & Chateaux after all) at Artisans, Maggie’s Pub, or by having Arbiter arrange a private dining experience.

Getting There: A 20 minute drive from Adirondack Regional Airport (SLK), which operates daily flights from BOS; a 2-hour drive from Burlington International Airport (BTV) or Albany International Airport (ALB); or a 4-5 hour drive from Boston or NYC

Arbiter Amenities:

  • Daily full breakfast for two
  • $100 resort credit
  • Complimentary pickup from Saranac Lake Airport or Lake Placid Airport
  • Priority status for room upgrade
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability

TWIN FARMS
Barnard, VT

image via Twin Farms

This 300-acre, idyllic Vermont escape is quintessential New England wintertime. Yet another all-inclusive Relais & Chateaux (they do it right!), there will be no worries – or shortage of incredible food and wine – if you end up getting snowed in. If you’re a downhill skier, their 6 on-property, private, groomed trails are for you. If not, then cozy up by the fire, hit the trails on snowshoes or cross-country skis, ice-skate on Copper Pond (in their words, they’ll provide the skates and hot toddies, you bring the laughter), or act like a kid again and go sledding. Bottom line is, you won’t want to leave Twin Farms this winter.

Getting There: A 40-minute drive from Lebanon Municipal Airport (LEB); a 90-minute drive from Burlington International Airport (BTV); a 3-hour drive from Boston; or a 5-hour drive from NYC

Arbiter Amenities:

  • Priority status for room upgrade
  • All meals are included in rates
  • House-made honey with local pottery ($150 value)
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability

OCEAN HOUSE
Watch Hill, RI

image via Ocean House

Although a seaside resort might not seem wintery at first glance, you’d really be hard-pressed to find a more cozy or festive place to bunk up. Ocean House overlooks the moody Atlantic (and Taylor Swift’s palatial estate), and its New England charm is perfectly suited for you to channel your inner Kennedy this festive season. They’ve also partnered with Veuve Clicquot for a seasonal Fondue Village through the winter months – queue the Instagrams.

Getting There: A 45-minute drive from Providence Airport (PVD); a 1.5-hour drive from Boston; or a 2.5 – 3-hour drive from NYC

Arbiter Amenities:

  • Priority status for room upgrade
  • Daily full breakfast for two per room
  • $100 resort credit
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability

Please reach out if you’re interested in booking any of these winter escapes, or have any questions on current hotel status! As noted above, when #bookedbyarbiter, our clients get amazing perks (and usually upgrades), and we often have access to exclusive incentives. We look forward to planning your summer travel, no matter how close to home it might be!
